The local cemetery was so cool, that we had to go back in the morning. This time I wanted to use my Infared Camera due to the clouds, blue sky and green grass. Matt said it best, “We could stay here for days shooting this place under different lighting conditions at different times of the day.”
Heading down the west coast is vastly different from anywhere else on the island. Not only is it glacier country, but it is a rain forest. The minute we crossed the milky, aqua, glacier-melt river and were surrounded by lush tropical forest, the rain started. It was just like the last trip! The rain here is not a light sprinkle — it’s a downpour. By the time we got to Franz Josef Glacier, the rain had let up, so we hiked up Sentinel Rock for a view. Last time we waited for 3 days in this area waiting for the weather to clear for a glacial ascent. This time we were only visiting for a quick hello. It had changed a little from out last visit. The cave at the base of the glacier was larger. A river runs under the glacier and exits through the cave mouth. 3 years ago, during the storm that we were stuck in, there was a cave in. We could see little black trails of hikers ascending the terminal face. That’s a really rough climb, but well worth it.
Onward to Fox Glacier. This area is much quieter and much more our speed. We checked in with our glacier guide and were told that the weather tomorrow (Easter Sunday) was looking bad. I planned 2 days due to unpredictable weather. Right now, it looks like Easter Sunday will be spent inside the camper staying dry and reading and we will do our glacier hike on Monday morning. Outside, the glacier is shrouded in clouds, mist and rain. A big storm is coming in tonight. Time to hunker down.
On a side note, some areas we park have warning signs about thieves vandalizing campers. We saw this “Thou Shalt Not Steal” sticker on a camper today.
